Single Motor Vehicle Collision Results in Impaired Charges
On Sunday March 10, 2024 at 3:30 a.m. a single vehicle collision occurred just east of the intersection of 7th Avenue East and 6th Street East, Owen Sound. A Nissan XTERRA failed to negotiate a turn at this location and left the roadway, narrowly missing a traffic light pole and striking two large utility boxes. The vehicle severed a telephone pole’s guy wire and area residents experienced temporary service outages.
The driver failed to remain at the scene and fled on foot. Officers of the Owen Sound Police Service attended and were able to identify and locate the driver at a residence in close proximity to the collision scene. Officers quickly determined that the driver was impaired by the consumption of alcohol and placed him under arrest.
The 35-year-old male driver from Owen Sound, was transported to the Police Station where he refused to comply with a legal requirement to provide samples of his breath for analysis.
The accused was charged with Impaired Driving, Refusing to Provide Breath Samples and Failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The involved vehicle was heavily damaged and was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days and the man’s driver’s license was automatically suspended for 90 days.
The accused was released from custody with a requirement to attend court later in March.
