Impaired Driver Arrested After Interaction With Officer On Foot Patrol
In the early morning hours of September 9th, 2024, an officer with the Owen Sound Police Service was on foot patrol in the downtown River District. While walking along 2nd Avenue East, the officer came across two individuals who were also walking, a male and a female, and engaged them in friendly conversation. The pair had obviously consumed a quantity of alcohol, but the officer had no immediate concerns and they parted ways after a brief social interaction.
At 2:20 a.m., approximately ½ hour later, the same officer observed the same two individuals, occupying a motor vehicle and the male was driving. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was requested to provide a sample of his breath into a roadside screening device, which the driver failed.
The 30 year old male from Aurora was arrested and brought back to the Owen Sound Police Service, where he provided 2 additional samples of his breath, registering 160mg and 160mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. These levels are twice the legal limit of alcohol allowed to operate a motor vehicle.
The accused driver was charged criminally with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was additionally charged with failing to display 2 licence plates on his motor vehicle, a Highway Traffic Act offence. The accused’s drivers licence was further suspended and his vehicle impounded for 7 days. He is to appear in Court in Owen Sound on September 19th, 2024.
