MEDIA RELEASE

Collision Results in Impaired Charge

Just after 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening emergency service personnel responded to a two-motor vehicle collision that occurred in the city at the intersection of 10th Street and 6th Avenue East.  Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and had to be towed from the scene.  Fortunately, the two drivers who were the only occupants of the vehicles, received minor injuries as a result of the collision.

The driver of the 1999 Toyota Corolla was west bound on 10th Street when he negotiated a left turn on to 6th Avenue West.  The 25-year-old male driver turned in front of the east bound 2006 Dodge Magnum.  The severity of the impact sent both vehicles into the west bound lanes of 10th Street.

Officers investigating the collision established concern of possible alcohol consumption of the driver of the Dodge Magnum and administered the roadside screening device to check alcohol concentration.  Upon registering a “fail” on the device, the driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with over the legal limit of alcohol in his body.    The young man, who as well is 25 years old and from Owen Sound was escorted to the police station for samples for his breath to be taken by a qualified breath technician.  The driver’s breath tests showed he had well over double the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

The driver now faces drinking and driving criminal charges as well as his drivers’ licence immediately suspended for a period of 90 days.  The young man was later released from police custody and will appear in the coming weeks in the Owen Sound Court of Justice.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla as well an Owen Sound resident was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
