The Owen Sound Police Service, along with the Owen Sound Fire Department, attended the scene of a motor vehicle collision in the 600 block of 10th Street West. A vehicle had lost control and struck a hydro pole at the top of the hill, causing major damage to both the vehicle and the pole.
Witnesses stopped to assist the driver, who ended up fleeing the scene on foot while the witness was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher. Several lanes of the roadway were closed while the investigation was taking place and a Hydro One technician attended to assess the risk and damage.
While the investigating Officer was still on scene, the driver of the vehicle returned and was found to be showing strong signs of impairment by alcohol, which led to his arrest. The 41 year old man, who was the vehicles lone occupant, was arrested and brought to the Owen Sound Police Service where he was required to provide two samples of his breath to a qualified Intozilyzer technician. The results of the breath tests measured more than twice the legal limit and confirmed the driver was impaired by alcohol.
The Owen Sound man was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and having over 80 mg of alcohol in his blood. He was further charged with several offences under the Highway Traffic Act. The driver's vehicle was impounded, and his license has further been suspended for 90 days.
