On January 17, 2022 at approximately 11:30 a.m. a 2011 Mercedes R 35 SUV was stolen from a driveway in the Village of Chatsworth. The theft was reported to the Grey-Bruce O.P.P. and area police services were notified.
At around 5:30 p.m. officers of the Owen Sound Police Service were conducting a targeted traffic enforcement initiative at the intersection of 5th Avenue West and 9th Street West. At that time and location, the stolen Mercedes was observed failing to stop for a stop sign. Officers stopped the stolen vehicle a short distance away and arrested the driver for numerous criminal offences including Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Driving While Prohibited and Failure to Comply with a Probation Order. The accused is further charged with driving under a suspended license and failing to stop for a stop sign under the Highway Traffic Act.
A 38-year-old man of no fixed address was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant and he is being detained in police custody pending a bail hearing that is scheduled to occur on January 18th, 2022.
The undamaged Mercedes was returned to the registered owner.
