On Friday March the 27th, the Owen Sound Emergency Communications Centre completed its first call with Bell Canada on the new Next Generation 911 platform. Years of planning in procurement, procedures and training have gone into the project which will enable the Owen Sound Police Service’s Communications Center to deliver new features not yet seen in Canada.

MALE ARRESTED FOR ARSON OVERNIGHT, OFFICERS EXTINGUISH FIRE

Just before midnight on March 24th, 2020, a concerned citizen contacted the Owen Sound Police to make a report of a suspicious person who had been knocking on doors in an upper east side neighbourhood. Police attended the area to look for the male but were simultaneously called away for a house on fire in the same general area. Police attended and observed flames approximatley 3-4 feet in height, inside the enclosed front porch of the residence.

An investigation into a fatal residential house fire that occurred on March 21, 2020 has been conducted by the Office of the Fire Marshall and the Criminal Investigations Branch of the Owen Sound Police Service (refer to original media release below).  The lone occupant of the residence, Deborah HOOD, 63 years of Owen Sound, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Residential Fire Fatality

On Saturday March 21, 2020 shortly after 7:30 pm, Owen Sound Police, Fire and EMS responded to the report of a residential fire on the east side of the City. Police arriving on scene were advised by a neighbour that the homeowner may still be inside the house. Police entered the residence, however were forced back by heavy smoke.

High-Rise Apartment Fire

On March 21, 2020 at approximately 5:45 am police, fire and EMS were dispatched to 305 14th Street West regarding an apartment fire.  An Owen Sound Police Officer attended the 4th floor apartment and was able to extinguish the fire.  The Police Officer suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated on scene.  The apartment occupant was transported to hospital as a precaution.  There were no additional injuries, however this incident could have been tragic if the fire ...

Car Fire Deemed to be Arson

On March 18, 2020 at approximately 2:00 am police and fire were dispatched to the 500 block of 8th Street West regarding a car fire.  Upon arrival, a 2009 Kia was observed to be engulfed in flames.  Owen Sound Fire extinguished the fire however the car was a total loss.

Fire at Westside Apartment Building

Just before 11:00 p.m. members of the Owen Sound Police Service attended an apartment building at the request of the Owen Sound Fire Service, as there was a fire in a third-floor apartment.  The fire was caused by a candle that was knocked over in the bathroom, which lit a towel on fire and then quickly spread to the contents of the bathroom.  The occupants of the apartment attempted to put out the flames but were unsuccessful.

Bank Robbery in Owen Sound- Man in Custody

On January 22, 2020 just before 11:30 a.m. a lone male entered a downtown bank with his face concealed by a bandana, glasses and a hood.  The man displayed a knife in a threatening manner to the teller and directed her to quickly place money into a bag.  The man then fled the bank with an undisclosed quantity of cash.

Lock It Or Lose It

The Owen Sound Police continue to get reports of theft from vehicles.  In most cases simply locking your vehicle will deter the thieves who move on to an easier target.  

Police are also warning about leaving valuables in vehicles especially if they are visible from outside.  If you have to leave valuables in your vehicle lock them in the trunk or at least hide them so they can not be seen.

Motor Vehicle Collision Sends One To Hospital

On 19Dec2019 at approximately 3:30 pm the Owen Sound Police investigated a motor vehicle collision at 8th Street East and 4th Avenue East.

The investigation revealed that a driver of a 2014 black Mazda proceeded southbound through the intersection colliding with an eastbound 2011 brown Honda.  The driver of the Mazda was charged with failing to yield to traffic on a through highway.

Overnight Winter Parking By-Law Reminder

The Owen Sound Police Service is reminding residents that the city’s overnight winter parking by-law came into effect December 1st. Parking on any city street is prohibited from 1:00 am to 7:00 am between December 1st and March 31st.
